The Importance of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis for HIV - Pharmacy Times

Image
PrEP therapy has revolutionized HIV treatment by protecting patients who are high risk for acquiring the virus. Approximately 37,000 people in the US are infected with HIV each year. 1 Despite the Ending the HIV Epidemic, A Plan for America, challenges still exist as it relates to the use of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to prevent new infections. In particular, current data suggest that of the more than 1 million people who need PrEP, less than 25% are actually receiving it. 2 Therefore, additional strategies are needed if we are to meet the 2030 EHE Goals of reducing new infections to fewer than 3000 per year. 3   PrEP is a medication taken in order to prevent acquiring HIV. Those who are high risk for HIV and who should consider PrEP therapy, in particular, are men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender (TG) individuals. PrEP should also be considered for individuals with multiple sexual partners, those trading sex for money, goods, or services, and people who

STI symptoms can range from mild to severe — and they can affect different parts of the body. After an initial infection, it can take days, weeks, months, or even years for symptoms to appear. But it's also common for some STIs, like chlamydia and hepatitis B, to be asymptomatic . This means people may not even realize they have it. Here are the main symptoms to be aware of: Pain when urinating or having sex can be a sign of everything from chlamydia and gonorrhea to genital herpes. Dark urine can occur with hepatitis B. NRTIs: Types, uses, side effects - Medical News Today

Image
Although there is no permanent cure for HIV, there are ways to treat and manage the condition to improve a person's longevity and quality of life. One way in which doctors treat HIV is using drugs called nucleoside/nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). HIV is a virus that attacks the human immune system and kills specific white blood cells that fight infections. These types of cells are commonly known as CD4 cells. HIV kills these CD4 cells so that they are not able to fight common infections in the body. As HIV progresses, the reduction in CD4 cells can lead to what doctors call opportunistic infections. However, early treatment can help prevent this outcome. Doctors may use NRTIs as part of the treatment plan for someone with HIV. NRTIs stop HIV from replicating and killing the CD4 cells. This article provides an overview of treating HIV using NRTIs. It explains how they work and lists the approved drugs currently available as treatment options. NRTIs are one of t

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs, formerly called sexually transmitted diseases, or STDs), are primarily spread through various types of sexual contact. In the United States, one in five people have an STI. You can reduce your risk of contracting an STI by using a barrier method of protection, such as a condom, during each type of sexual encounter, which includes oral sex. He Helped Cure the ‘London Patient’ of H.I.V. Then He Turned to Covid. - The New York Times

Ravindra Gupta, who led the efforts that resulted in the second case of a patient being cured of H.I.V., was drawn into pandemic research. Visionaries is a limited series that looks at figures who are trying to transform the way we live. Ravindra Gupta had studied drug-resistant H.I.V. for more than a decade when he first encountered Adam Castillejo, who would become known as the "London patient," the second person in the world to be cured of H.I.V. Dr. Gupta, who goes by Ravi, was a professor at University College London straddling the clinical and academic worlds when Mr. Castillejo presented as both H.I.V.-positive and with relapsed lymphoma, after a previous transplant using healthy stem cells from Mr. Castillejo's own body had failed. Building on work by the German hematologist Gero Hütter and others that went into curing the first person of H.I.V. — Timothy Ray Brown, known as the "Berlin patient" — Dr. Gupta and his colleagues proposed using stem cells f

Sexually Transmitted Infections on the Rise, CDC reports - Cleveland Clinic Newsroom

Image
CLEVELAND – Sexually transmitted infections are on the rise, according to the CDC. The agency reports that cases decreased during the early months of the pandemic, but most resurged by the end of that year. "Patients were not going for their regular checkups, patients even when they thought they were exposed did not go for treatment, and many patients had what we call like a community barrier in the sense that some affected people reside in communities with no access to health care and did not seek care outside their community," explained Tosin Goje, MD, obstetrician and gynecologist for Cleveland Clinic. "And imagine a person who is infected who is not going out, not traveling, there is a tendency to re-infect each other, especially in a small community." Dr. Goje said there are many ways to help prevent sexually transmitted infections. The first step is education. The public needs to understand what exactly they are and the signs and symptoms to look out for

STDs and Dermatologic Symptoms - Dermatology Times

Image
June 6, 2022 Kenneth J. Tomecki, MD, discussed the clinical relevance of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) to dermatology and outlined what to look for and how to treat various conditions at the 2022 Fall Clinical Dermatology Conference for PAs & NPs. Sexually transmitted diseases and infections (STDs/STIs) are common health issues in the United States, according to Kenneth J. Tomecki, MD, staff physician in the department of dermatology at the Cleveland Clinic, and past president of the American Academy of Dermatology. 1 He cited 2018 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that revealed 1 in 5 people in the United States had an STI. In that year alone, there were 26 million newly acquired STIs, nearly 50% of which were acquired by people aged 15 to 24 years. Nearly $16 billion was spent on direct medial costs. 2 In light of these statistics, it is important that physicians expand their knowledge about different STDs and how to treat them, Tomecki

DTG: Millions yet to lay hands on new HIV drug in SA - Health-e News

Image
Despite studies proving that the new HIV treatment drug – dolutegravir (DTG) – is highly effective at suppressing the virus in the body with fewer side effects, millions of South Africans remain on the old efavirenz regimen. In 2019, the National Department of Health began replacing efavirenz with the dolutegravir regimen. However, of the 7.9 million people living with HIV, only three million are on the new regimen. Of the almost eight million HIV-positive people, 5,645 120 are on antiretroviral therapy (ART). In 2018, the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommended using DTG as the preferred first-line and second-line treatment for all populations, including pregnant women and those of childbearing potential. #SouthAfrica's #HIV treatment programme could shift almost entirely to WHO-preferred first-line regimen inc. #dolutegravir and #lamivudine. @aidsmap https://t.co/J1MDvX6Afn — AIDSPortal (@AIDSPortal) June 7, 2022 DTG the obvious choice Nelson Dlamini, Communi

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID): Symptoms, causes, and treatments - Insider

Image
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is usually caused by bacteria from an untreated STI. It can trigger symptoms like pelvic pain, fever, frequent urination, abnormal bleeding, and more. PID can cause complications like infertility, so it's important to get antibiotics right away. Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is an infection of the female reproductive organs often caused by an untreated sexually transmitted infection (STI), like gonorrhea or chlamydia.  The infection affects about 5% of women in the United States and is most common in women ages 15 to 24.  PID can be painful and may even cause fertility issues. But there are ways to treat the condition and steps you can take to reduce your risk of developing PID in the first place.
